Writing Workshop: Power of Place a Prose Writing Workshop with Brooks Rexroat
Please join us in welcoming Brooks Rexroat author of Thrift Store Coats who will be putting on a writing workshop, The Power of Place, on July 7th at 4 pm at The Tuxedo Project. In addition to the workshop, Brooks Rexroat will be doing a short Q&A about his latest book and signing.
More about the Writing Workshop:
A strong character and a plot with great motion are staples of prose writing, but another transformative composition tool sometimes slips under the radar: detailed attention to setting. In this one-hour workshop designed for writers of all abilities and experience levels, we'll discuss the ways in which attention to place can elevate a text, then we'll write, briefly revise, and share a place-based fiction or nonfiction microstory. After the workshop, Rexroat will read from and sign copies of Thrift Store Coats, his recently released collection of stories from the upper Midwest.
This event is free and open to the public. All you will need is paper and pen or a laptop, tablet or a composition device of your choice
More about the Thrift Store Coats:
Thrift Store Coats is a collection of twelves stories that transports readers to the post-industrial Midwest and asks them to explore the lives of those living on its quiet edge. Each story centers around people who live, work, hope, believe, struggle and ultimately adapt or leave when the world decides it no longer needs you.
Interwoven with themes of love, lineage, poverty, and survival, these stories grapple with the idea of identity — not only of where they fit into the world but of how their origins impact their place in the future.
BROOKS REXROAT was raised near Cincinnati, Ohio at the intersection of the Rust Belt and Appalachia. The importance of place has always surrounded him, and it deeply inhabits his characters. The son of public school teachers, he went to high school with the children of farmers and college with the children of miners. Then tension between circumstance and the transformative power of education were never far from his mind, which caused him to leave a successful career as a writer, reporter, and editor in order to pursue a teaching life.
After earning a Master of Fine Arts Degree in creative prose from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he embarked on a journey in higher education that has included teaching opportunities at open enrollment community colleges, regional public universities, and rigorous private liberal arts colleges. Now based at Brescia University in Owensboro, Kentucky, Rexroat was a 2016-2017 Fulbright U.S. Teaching and Research Scholar at Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University in Siberia, Russia.
