Pages Holiday Book Drive for Rx for Reading
This Holiday season Pages is supporting Rx for Reading Detroit by holding a book drive on their behalf. Rx for Reading is a children's literacy program sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy. Throughout the rest of December and into the new year we are holding a holiday book drive on their behalf.
Participating in this good cause is easy. Here's how you can contribute:
When you visit Pages we will have a basket by the front register where you can pick a book of your choice to purchase on behalf of Rx for Reading. This way you won't have to worry about whether or not the book is the "right" one as each of the books will have been selected with their specific wishes and needs in mind. All of the books donated will be used in their reading programs and, more importantly, will find their way into a child's home.
This drive will continue through the new year so please consider coming into the bookshop and donating a book of your choice!
More about RX for Reading Detroit:
Rx for Reading Detroit is a children's literacy program sponsored by the University of Detroit Mercy. Since it was founded in September 2014, Rx for Reading has distributed over 110,000 new and gently used books in Detroit, Dearborn, Ypsilanti, Hamtramck, and Highland Park.
Access to books is a critical factor in childhood literacy. Access to books has immediate and long-term effects on children’s vocabulary, comprehension, and school readiness, improving reading performance and children’s attitudes toward reading. In fact, the number of books in a child’s home is one of the most important predictors of her educational attainment and lifetime earnings.
Our mission is to expand access to high-quality children’s books and support low-income families in reading with their children. Our vision is to eliminate the opportunity gap by ensuring universal access to age-appropriate reading material.
Our model is one of community-based collaboration: We have partnered with over 50 organizations committed to incorporating literacy into their own work for children and families. Our partners include low-income health, dental, and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) clinics, Head Start and Great Start programs, elementary schools, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, community centers, and churches.
