Pages Bookshop Presents: A Literary Celebration and Fundraiser with Lester Sloan and Aisha Sabatini Sloan
A small update: Due to unforeseen circumstances, this event is changing slightly. Instead of it taking place throughout the day it will only be taking place from 1pm to 2pm. We hope you will still join us via Instagram or in the store.
Join us on November 13th at 1pm for a celebratory fundraiser to honor Lester Soan and Aisha Sabatini Sloan's new book, "Captioning the Archives" and help raise the funds needed to restore and digitize Lester Sloan's archives which were recently damaged by a 100-year flood.
Aisha and Lester will going live from Pages Bookshop from 1 - 2pm. You can come in and say hi or tune in via McSweeny's Insatgram Page.
Supporting our local literary community is one of our core beliefs at Pages Bookshop and so we hope you'll join us, virtually or in person, for this important event.
Leading up to this event you can check out and make a commitment to the Kickstarter that has been put together to raise the necessary funds need to professionally restore and preserve Lester's life's work.
Lester Soan and Aisha Sabatini Sloan's "Captioning the Archives" will be for sale during this event and online as well.
About Capturing the Archives
In November, McSweeney's will publish a book Lester co-wrote with his daughter, Aisha Sabatini Sloan, Captioning the Archives: A Conversation in Photography + Text. In this father-daughter collaboration, Lester opened his archive of street photography, portraits, and news photos, and Aisha interviewed him, creating rich, probing, dialogue-based captions for more than one hundred photographs. Lester’s images encompass celebrity portraits, key news events like Pope John Paul’s visit to Mexico, Black cultural life in Europe, and, with astonishing emotion, the everyday lives of Black folk in Los Angeles and Detroit. Publisher's Weekly calls it: "Insightful, inquisitive, and full of vivid photographs, this powerful work is as beautiful as it is galvanizing."
